Your website journey begins with a domain name. As your online identity address, a domain name is something that should be descriptive of your business, easy to type, and memorable. Or, in simpler terms, your domain name can be your business name. Read on, let’s dive more into the domain name world!

Generally, the most desirable domain name extension is .com (which stands for “commercial”). As you have probably seen, other popular domain name extensions include:

  • .net (stands for “network”)
  • .org (stands for “organization”)
  • .info (stands for “information”)
  • .biz (stands for “business”)
  • .edu (stands for “education”)

There are also country specific domain extensions such as .us (United States), .in (India), .jp (Japan), .ca (Canada), .fr (France), and so on. Newer domain name extensions include .online, .link, .tech, .site, and so on. There are also industry specific extensions such as .car, .energy, .credit, and .healthcare. The list goes on for domain name extensions!

When registering a domain name, it may be worthwhile to register various common extensions to protect your company or brand identity. For example, let’s say you sell artwork and your business name is “Kristen’s Artwork.” If available, you could register kristensartwork.com, kristensartwork.net and kristensartwork.info. Some domain name registrars offer special discounts when registering more than one extension. Important things to consider when obtaining a domain include amount of years, private registration, and locking.

People also buy and sell domain names. This is referred to as “domaining” or “domainers.” There are various marketplaces to buy and sell domain names such as Flippa, Sedo, SnapNames, Godaddy Auctions and eBay. Monitoring expiring domain names is an example strategy that domainers use to grab domains for possible resale.
